불안한 꿈속에서 난 홀로 걸었어요.

가로등이 비치는 자갈이 깔린 좁은 길이었죠.

춤고 습한 시운에 난 옷깃을 세웠죠.

그때 어둠을 가르는 반짝이는 네온 불빛이

내 눈 안에 들어왔죠.

그리곤 그 침묵의 소리를 어루만졌어요.

And in the naked light I saw

Ten thousand people, 

maybe more.

People talking without speaking.

People hearing without listening.

People writing songs that voices 

Never share and no one dared

Disturb the sound of silence.

적나라한 불빛 아래에서 나는 보았죠.

만 명, 아니 어쩌면 더 많은 사람들을.

아무 의미 없는 이야길 하는 사람들.

건성으로 듣는 척하는 사람들.

다른 이와 함께 나눌 수 없는

노래를 짓는 사람들. 어느 누구도

감히 그 침묵의 소리를 깨트리지 못했어요.

"Fools," said I, "You do not know.

Silence like a cancer grows.

Hear my words that 

I might teach you.

Take my arms that 

I might reach you."

But my words like 

silent raindrops fell

And echoed in the wells of silence.

난 말했죠. "바보들! 당신들은 모르는군요.

침묵은 마치 암처럼 자라난다는 걸.

당신을 일깨워 줄 수 있는 내 말을 들으세요.

당신에게 다가갈 수 있게 내 팔을 잡으세요."

하지만 내 말은 소리 없는 빗방울처럼 떨어져

침묵의 샘에서 공허한 메아리처럼 울렸죠.

And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon god they made

And the sign flashed out its warning,

In the words that it was forming.

And the sign said, 

"The words of the prophets are written 

on the subway walls and tenement halls."

And whispered in the sounds of silence.

사람들은 자신들이 만들어 낸

네온의 신에게 절하며 기도했죠.

그러자 경고 사인이 번쩍였어요.

네온이 만든 문구였죠.

이런 말이었어요.

"예언자들의 말은 지하철이나

공동 주택 벽에 쓰여 있다네."

침묵의 소리로 그렇게 속삭였죠.

사람들은 진정한 소리를 잃어버린 채 살고 있어요. 침묵의 소리만이 남아 있네요.

1970년대를 풍미한 미국의 포크록 밴드입니다.

1957년 만화 영화의 이름에서 아이디어를 얻어 톰과 제리(Tom & Jerry)라는 이름으로 음악 활동을 시작하였습니다.

친구 사이인 동시에 라이벌이었던 폴 사이먼(Paul Simon)과 아트 가펑클(Art Garfunkel)은 어린 시절부터 서로의 음악에 관심을 두며 꿈을 키웠습니다.

고등학교 졸업 후 진로가 달라 잠시 밴드 활동을 멈추기도 했지만 1964년에 다시 만나 <Wendnesday Morning 3 A.M.>을 발매하며 정식 데뷔하였습니다.

'I Am A Rock', 'The Sound Of Silence', 'The Boxer' 등의 곡들이 인기를 얻으며 큰 명성을 얻었으며, 1970년 마지막 앨범 <Bridge Over Troubled Water>를 끝으로 팀은 해체 되었습니다.

폴 사이먼은 솔로 뮤지션으로, 아트 가펑클은 가수 및 평화운동가로 활동 중입니다.
